That is, the saving throw has to represent something in the game world. One of the things that it might represent is the character's luck and quick-thinking in getting behind a convenient pillar. Or it might be something else that is there. In any case, though, the save is the chance to do something like that.

I dunno, as a Referee, I might be willing to give a minor bonus to the character of a player who came up with something specifically descriptive like that, but rolling twice to save seems like too much to me. (See my comments on rolling dice to find out target numbers for other dice in my extended review of Fantasy Wargaming on my blog.)faoladhhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03691952430041394614noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7239577512598038009.post-37900982686539919332012-12-03T19:54:05.549-08:002012-12-03T19:54:05.549-08:00In a way, I think stuffing the genie back in the b...In a way, I think stuffing the genie back in the bottle is irrelevant, as long as those of us who distrust system can find other like-minded players. Where this really matters is for getting new players, because however many potential players there are is perhaps evenly split between those who would love to fiddle with a complex system and those who would prefer to focus on a fictional world. With the current system-heavy focus, many of the latter never get into RPGs.Talysmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02162328521343832412noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7239577512598038009.post-24264633971349349402012-12-03T13:38:39.421-08:002012-12-03T13:38:39.421-08:00Well thought out. Unfortunately, I also suffer from not being able to stuff the genie of player expectations back in the bottle. All of the guys I play with regularly seem to like games with what feels like "more player options" (some of them more than others). I guess I'd also like a sort of opportunity to 'ad hoc' ruling by the DM... a player might ask, "If I jump behind this pillar, will it protect me from the dragon's breath?" and the DM might say, "Let's roll to see if you jump behind the pillar in time, and, if you do, you get a bonus to your save."Stefan Poaghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08192911890556534923noreply@blogger.com
