How to Defeat Basilisks

Yeah, you could try fighting blindfolded, or in total darkness, or the trick of making it see its own reflection (how many D&D versions allow a chance of a basilisk to petrify itself?) But barring that, what about sneaking up behind it and tossing a bag over its head? As long as you can do this while avoiding its gaze, the combat afterwards will be much simpler than fighting blindfolded.

Also, many D&D versions give ranges for gaze attacks. Try pelting it with arrows.

  1. I've always been fond of casting darkness or darkness 15' radius on it and then flooding the dark with arrows and fire.

Or anything really that creates a cloud that obscures it. We used a barrel of flour once, not realizing flour was explosive. The DM knew it though. The party survivors were able to kill the critter after the flames settled out.
